Dhirgheshwari temple is located on the northern bank of river Brahmaputra. It was built by Ahom King Swargadeo Siva Singha (1714-1744 CE). The temple is considered as one of the Shakti peethas.
The great sage Markandeya, performed penance on Goddess Durga in this place. Maa Durga pleased by his penance appeared before him and blessed. So Dhirgeshwari is being worshipped as Goddess Durga here.
The main sacrum sanctorum is a cave and the idol of Goddess is being installed underground.
Many images of esoteric gods and goddesses are engraved on the rocks en route to temple. The exact period of these carvings are not known.
